Many German citizens are discovering the relaxing and fulfilling past time of gardening. According to the German Garden Industry Association, the average German consumer spends 180 Euros annually on plants and plant products.

This indicates Germany’s gardening industry is still going strong despite the global finical and economic crisis, which has crippled many industries. However, German nurseries are still feeling pressure from nondomestic competitors.

These competitors are offering exotic plants for less money than the local nurseries can sell their domestic plants.

Local nurseries, undaunted by the completion, claim that despite the increased competition warm weather brings out the consumers, to their nurseries. Cold weather discourages gardeners and slows the market down, driving most consumers to the cheaper foreign competitors, but not enough to cause any serious damage to it. Gardening and the industries surrounding it are driving the German economy.

Garden industry experts see continued growth in the future, driven in part by the country’s aging population. With increasing age many people prefer or are compelled to, due to heal issues, stay at home. To keep busy they often invest their time and money into their gardens and lawns. Hiring landscapers and purchasing garden appliances and other garden gadgets to make the work they do in their gardens less cumbersome for them.

This fascination for gardening is a healthy one for the older population, providing them with a stress free way to exercise and keep active despite any health issues.
